Situated in the heart of the U.S. state of Missouri, Morgan County is a region steeped in history and natural beauty. As of the 2010 census, the county had a population of 20,565, with Versailles serving as its administrative center and county seat. Morgan County was established on January 5, 1833, following its separation from neighboring Cooper County. The county proudly bears the name of General Daniel Morgan, a prominent figure in the American Revolutionary War.
The origins of the county seat, Versailles, can be traced back to 1854 when it was officially platted. The town's name pays homage to the renowned French royal estate located near Paris, France. One notable landmark in Versailles is the Martin Hotel, which was established in 1853. In the years following the Civil War, the hotel welcomed illustrious guests such as circus impresario P.T. Barnum and infamous outlaw Jesse James. Recognized for its historical significance, the Martin Hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1978 and now operates as a museum.
In 1858, the Mulhollen Station in Morgan County became a mail stop for the newly established Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach line. This vital communication and transportation link connected the county to San Francisco, California, facilitating the exchange of goods and mail for several years.
Another architectural gem in the area is the Morgan County Courthouse in Versailles. The building features elegant French-style details, such as a mansard roof, in keeping with the town's namesake. Unfortunately, the courthouse was damaged by fire in 1887, but the majority of the records were saved, and the building was promptly reconstructed and restored. The courthouse is also listed on the NRHP, showcasing the region's commitment to preserving its history and heritage.
Throughout its history, coal mining has played a significant role in the economy of Morgan County. The industry not only provided jobs and resources for the local community but also contributed to the overall growth and development of the region. Today, Morgan County continues to celebrate its rich history, beautiful landscape, and vibrant community spirit.

The Morgan County Courthouse, a historic architectural gem, graces the town of Versailles in Morgan County, Missouri. Constructed in 1889, this magnificent two-story building showcases the elegance of Second Empire style architecture. Made from red brick and set upon a solid limestone block foundation, the courthouse spans an impressive 85 feet by 85 feet.
One of the most striking features of the Morgan County Courthouse is its ornate cupola, which is adorned with intricate decorative elements fashioned from cast iron, molded tin, and wood. This stunning aediculated cupola adds an air of grandeur to the structure and reflects the craftsmanship and attention to detail of the era. Additionally, the courthouse boasts four mansarded corner pavilions, each rising to three stories, further enhancing its majestic appearance.
The courthouse has not only served as the center of local government and justice but has also played a significant role in the community's history and identity. As a testament to its architectural and historical importance, the Morgan County Courthouse was proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
